“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31.
“Inactivity weakens the system. God made men and women to be active and useful. Nothing can increase the strength of the young like proper exercise of all the muscles in useful labor.” The Health Reformer, February 1, 1871, par. 6.
Exercise helps strengthen the immune system by increasing the infection-fighting white blood cells. It also speeds up metabolism, which assists nature to get rid of unwanted waste, which relieves the burden on the immune system to deal with it.
“Conditioning” exercise is what you need. This the type of exercise that will increase your endurance gradually. You may use three things to help you guide yourself in the intensity that you exercise:
Learn what your safe ten-second pulse rate, calculated to your age, and stay within that range as you exercise.
Exercise to the intensity that you are barely able to carry on a conversation with someone as you exercise.
If you should develop chest pain during exercise, stop at that point. Follow the advice of your physician.
Exercise a minimum of 20-30 minutes at the peak of endurance daily if at all possible, at least every other day. The body forces seem to “escape” from good condition rather easily.
Walking is the best exercise possible. A brisk walk in the open air will invigorate the entire system causing a full and healthful circulation of the blood. Be sure not to overexert yourself. Use a walking stick for stability and for protection against stray dogs. On the first day, walk as far as is comfortable and gradually work up to five miles a day.
“For how can the servant of this my lord talk with this my lord? for as for me, straightway there remained no strength in me, neither is there breath left in me.” Daniel 10:17.
The lungs are constantly throwing off impurities, and they need to be constantly supplied with fresh air. Impure air does not afford the necessary supply of oxygen, and the blood passes to the brain and other organs without being vitalized. Hence the necessity of thorough ventilation. To live in close, ill-ventilated rooms, where the air is dead and vitiated, weakens the entire system. It becomes peculiarly sensitive to the influence of cold, and a slight exposure induces disease. It is close confinement indoors that makes many women pale and feeble. They breathe the same air over and over until it becomes laden with poisonous matter thrown off through the lungs and pores, and impurities are thus conveyed back to the blood.” Ministry of Healing, p. 274.
The immune system needs oxygen in which to fight its battles to destroy germs, because when they engulf bacteria they produce certain poisons with the oxygen, which destroy the germs. When the body does not get enough oxygen, cancer cells thrive in that environment, and the immune system has more of a battle to fight those cells. Cancer is caused by a weakened immune system. We have cancer cells in our body all the time; however, the reason we do not get cancer is because the immune system is able to do its job effectively in engulfing them. Pure fresh air is very important. That means good air with negatively ionized particles from forests and oceans. Do deep breathing exercise daily (three times a day is best). Be sure to do this the first time early in the morning before breakfast. Take a deep breath to full expansion, hold, exhale, and hold that. Repeat this 20 times. This helps the circulation and gets toxins out of the system. Breathe fresh air while sleeping (open windows). Even on cold winter nights, keep window cracked. Air the bedrooms daily with the open windows. A good time is in the morning so that the room can warm up again if it’s cold. Do not smoke tobacco or breathe second-hand smoke. Avoid smog and all chemicals, cleaning solutions, solvents, paint removers, insect sprays, deodorants, hair dyes, disinfectants, pest strips, etc
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6.
Trust in Divine Power offers peace and assurance. When the mind is free and happy from a sense of duty well done, and from the satisfaction of giving happiness and cheer to others, it brings joy and peace to the whole being. The consciousness of right doing is one of the best medicines for the prevention of disease.
The human brain produces and secretes hormones into the system when it is happy and experiencing joy and peace. These hormones invigorate and strengthen every cell of the body. True joy and peace come from a knowledge of God, and trust in Him. The brain also produces other hormones that cause a toxic reaction in the whole system, affecting the metabolism of every cell. These hormones are produced when experiencing fear, anger, frustration, hate, envy, and guilt.
The mind is not just a wonderful computer that can handle and store information; it is also a moral and spiritual entity. By this, we mean that it has the power to discriminate even that which is morally right and morally wrong, and it is endowed with the capacity to enjoy a spiritual life and fellowship with the Creator. One’s relations to the moral and spiritual laws of his being have a vital bearing on physical health.
The Bible says “A sound heart is the life of the flesh, but envy is the rottenness of the bones.” Proverbs 23:7. This means that right thinking will promote life and health while wrong thinking will invite decay and death. Thoughts are accompanied by corresponding feelings. If the thoughts are wrong, the feelings will be wrong. If the thoughts run in the channel of complaining, distrust, suspicion, murmuring, jealousy, envy, resentment or anger, the feelings will be dark and gloomy. Such feelings have a positive poisonous affect on the glands, the blood, stomach, liver, heart, and indeed the whole body. Paul’s prescription is a good one for life and health: “Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report, if there be any virtue and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Philippians 4:8.
“Pure air, sunlight, abstemiousness, rest, exercise, proper diet, the use of water, and trust in divine power—these are the true remedies. Every person should have knowledge of nature's remedial agencies and how to apply them. It is essential both to understand the principles involved in the treatment of the sick and to have a practical training that will enable one to rightly to use this knowledge.” Ministry of Healing, 127.
The Creator has given us the tremendous gifts of body and mind with which to enjoy all that life has to offer. He desires that we appreciate this wonderful gift by doing our part to keep our bodies and minds in the best possible condition, that we might have a rich spiritual fellowship with Him. We should present our bodies as living (live) sacrifices unto God (Romans 12:1). We are under definite obligation to God to govern our bodies, rule our appetites, and control our passions.
As we begin to appreciate the great blessings of life and health that God gives to us, and as we study our bodies to understand that surely we are "fearfully and wonderfully made" (Psalm 139:14), we will be inspired with reverence toward our Maker. Instead of abusing and marring God's handiwork, we will do all in our power to preserve it and to keep it in the best possible running order. We will then begin to see that God's laws of health are not an arbitrary set of 'negatives,' but guidelines that, if followed, will be an inconceivable blessing. Yes, God will truly bless us with the health and happiness when we meet His conditions.
